Chapter Twelve

Daniel watched as Aiden circled the clearing with his Minotaur. It seemed his boyfriend was determined to make sure they were safe. It was admirable. Especially when he knew how afraid Aiden truly was in this situation. Perhaps that was why he kept circling the perimeter.

“Hey, get your shelter made,” William instructed, knocking his shoulder into Daniel’s. “While you’re at it, make it big enough for two.”

“Huh?” Daniel looked at his cousin. “We’re not sharing.”

William gave him a look that said Daniel was stupid. “I meant for you and Aiden.”

“Oh. Right.” Daniel nodded and turned to the spot Aiden had chosen for himself. He’d noticed that the Medium had packed a tent, but Daniel had no intention of letting him us it. Aiden would be sharing his shelter. Drawing a magic circle on the ground in chalk, Daniel whispered, “Spirits of earth and stone, grants us shelter from the elements.”

The circle glowed, and Daniel held a picture of a small house in his mind. Materializing from the natural stone and wood of the forest, the structure took form until a small house stood before him. It wasn’t big by any standards, twelve feet long and wide and eight feet high. There was a door and a chimney. Opening the door, Daniel found a cot big enough for two, shelves, and a bench for their things beside the hearth. There were no windows, but that had been intentional on Daniel’s part.

This would be perfect. It would keep them warm and dry but also would leave no trace once they left. All Daniel would have to do is erase the enchantment.

“You’re in there, with Daniel.”

Daniel ignored his cousin talking with Aiden as he started taking his things out of his pack and placing them on the shelves. Frowning, he notice there was nowhere for Minerva and Lenore. Looking to the far wall, he willed a perch big enough for both birds.

“Wow,” Aiden gasped as he came in. “You did this?”

“Yeah.” Daniel smiled. “Construction magic is pretty basic in my family. Doesn’t your mom do this when you come here?”

Aiden shook his head. “No. She demands we use tents. It’s to make it equal and also because you can’t always use magic in some places. If we were to have to camp out in the human realm, it would be weird to call on huts like this.”

“True.” Daniel could see the logic in Natalie’s teachings. Still, there wasn’t a chance of them running into Mundanes in the Nether. Plus they had no idea for how long they were going to be here. He didn’t want live in a tent for an untold amount of time. “Would you prefer I set up a tent for you?”

Silently Daniel prayed that Aiden said no. He intentionally set up the hut to be big enough for two. If Aiden decided to camp out in a tent, he’d have used the extra magic for nothing. Constructing these huts wasn’t easy. It took a lot of concentration and power.
